In exciting email news, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) released yesterday, May 6, 2010, that email will now support non-latin domain names. I had to turn up NPR because I could barely believe my ears. This is the first major change that ICANN has made on the internet domain system since its inception. From now on, companies in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates will have the option to buy domains other than ‘.com’ , ‘.net’ etc. I am really interested in seeing how they handle domain writing right to left vs. left to right!

Egypt: مصر (Egypt) .eg and .masr
Saudi Arabia: السعودية (AlSaudiah)
United Arab Emirates: امارات (Emarat)

This is great news. It’s time. Domain names already support different characters so it’s time that emails too.
